Food Photography That Sells the Dish

On a delivery app, the photo is the menu. Customers scroll fast and order with their eyes, and a dish photographed under kitchen fluorescents will lose to a competitor's styled shot every time — regardless of which one tastes better.

AIM generates appetising food imagery for menus, delivery listings, specials boards and social, without hiring a food stylist or letting a plate go cold under studio lights.

Light is the whole trick

Food photography lives and dies on lighting. Soft window light for fresh and healthy, hard directional light for texture and drama, warm tungsten for comfort. Naming the light you want in the prompt does more for the result than describing the food in detail.

Angle by dish type

Burgers and layered dishes want a low, near-eye-level angle. Bowls, pizza and flat lays want to be seen from above. Drinks want a straight-on hero shot with backlight. Say the angle explicitly and you avoid the most common food photography mistake.

Seasonal menus without a reshoot

Every new special traditionally means another shoot or another compromise. Generating means the seasonal menu, the holiday promo and the limited-time item all get proper imagery on the day they launch.

Freshness reads as colour and moisture

What makes food look appetising is largely physical: the gloss on a sauce, condensation on a cold glass, steam off something hot, the bright green of a herb that has just been cut. Dull, dry and uniformly coloured food looks old regardless of how it is lit. Ask for those specific cues directly, because they are what the eye reads as fresh — and freshness is the entire proposition you are selling.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for a delivery app listing?

Check the platform's rules. Many require the image to represent the actual dish, so the safest approach is generating from a reference photo of your real plate.

Can I match my restaurant's plating?

Yes — upload a photo of the real dish as your reference and use the prompt to fix the lighting, angle and setting.

What formats work for menus?

Square works for delivery apps and grids, 16:9 for menu boards and website headers, 9:16 for stories.
